Insight 25:
Consciousness has no time and is only now.
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you: Before Abraham was, I am."
New Testament, John 8:58
We've already explored the insight that awareness occurs in no time other than now. Here, we simply check to make sure that this insight also applies to consciousness – that is, awareness perceived as a field in which things occur rather than a point around which they occur.
In my direct observation, yes: The field of consciousness exists now, in this moment. And in this moment arise all of the perturbations in this field that make up my experience of existence: feelings, thoughts, bodily sensations, and perceptions.
Of course, I can remember an experience from the past. But this memory arises in consciousness now. And it reminds me of another experience that also occurred in the now when it happened.
Similarly, I can anticipate an experience in the future. But, again, the thought or image that arises in my consciousness does so now. And should that experience occur in the future, when it comes, I will experience it as happening now.
